Vol. 375 No. 1

Written Answers. - Killininney Tower, Tallaght, Dublin.

79.

asked the Minister for Finance the steps, if any, he intends to take to protect and preserve Killininney Tower, Oldcourt Road, Tallaght, Dublin 24 by causing the Commissioners of Public Works to make a guardianship order in respect of the tower; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Killininney Tower and associated medieval remains at Old Court, Tallaght, is registered as an historic monument and it is an offence for the owner or any other person to interfere with it.

Efforts by Dublin County Council to prevent vandalism to the monument have proved to be ineffective and in these circumstances the making of a guardianship order would not improve the situation.

The County Council are considering the possibility of serving a notice on the owner under the Local Government (Sanitary Services) Act, 1964 requiring him to render the building non-dangerous and to prevent it from again becoming a source of danger to the public or any person. Such notice will issue only after consultation with and with the consent of the Office of Public Works, and is intended to force the owner to secure the building from trespass and further damage, this being the most effective measure at this stage.
