Vol. 375 No. 1

Written Answers. - Tallaght (Dublin), Garda Strength.

105.

asked the Minister for Justice whether there is a grave shortage of gardaí in the Tallaght area, Dublin 24; and if he will ensure that gardaí are redeployed from other parts of the country to this area in order that the same ratio of gardaí as exists in other urban centres is provided in this new town.

The detailed deployment of Garda manpower is a matter for the Garda authorities who keep the strength assigned to the various stations under regular review in the light of changing needs and circumstances.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that they consider that the current strength at Tallaght station is adequate having regard to overall resources and other demands on Garda services. Apart from the strength assigned to the local station, a back-up service is available to the Tallaght area from units such as the Central Detective Unit, the Special Detective Unit and the Crime Task Forces based at the Dublin Metropolitan Area Headquarters at Harcourt Square. In addition, the opening of a new Garda station at Tallaght and the transfer of the District Headquarters there in April of this year has provided for improved efficiency in the policing of the area.

The Garda authorities do not consider it feasible to redeploy manpower from other areas in Tallaght in present circumstances but the policing arrangements for the area will continue to be kept under review.
