asked the Minister for Labour the number of persons placed by the National Manpower Service in (a) labour market schemes and (b) jobs for the first nine months of this year and the corresponding figures for 1986; if the 1987 figures include persons referred under the Jobsearch programme, and if so, the proportion they represent; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The table below shows the number of people placed by the National Manpower Service in:
(a)labour market schemes including people referred under the Jobsearch programme, and
(b)jobs including people placed from the Jobsearch programme
for the first nine months of this year and the corresponding figures for 1986.
The table also shows for 1987:
(a)the number of people referred to labour market schemes and job vacancies under the Jobsearch programme, and
(b)the number at (a) as a proportion of the total referred in 1987.

The Jobsearch programme commenced in April 1987. While placements under the Employment Incentive Scheme and Enterprise have been adversely affected by the general economic situation, placements on the other schemes are in line with expectations.
I am generally satisfied with the operation of the Jobsearch programme.
