Vol. 375 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Radio.

9. D'fhiafraigh

d'Aire Cumarsáide an bhfuil sé i gceist go mbeidh cosaint ar fáil i leith na gceart atá ag Radio na Gaeltachta faoi láthair sa Bhille atá le teacht os comhair na Dála i dtaobh ceadúnas Raidio pobail agus an ndéanfaidh sé ráiteas faoi.

11.

asked the Minister for Communications if his proposed legislation on local radio will contain any minimum broadcasting standards; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

12.

asked the Minister for Communications if his proposed legislation on local radio will preclude RTE from any involvement, or if RTE will be able to compete for licences on a commercial basis; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

68.

asked the Minister for Communications if his proposed legislation on local radio will preclude the owners of newspapers, religious or sporting organisations, and political parties or persons with an involvement in political life from the ownership of local stations; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 9, 11, 12 and 68 together.

A Bill to provide for sound broadcasting services will be circulated to Deputies tomorrow, Friday, 20 November, 1987. I believe that it would not be appropriate to reveal the details of the Bill in advance of its circulation.

An bhfuil an tAire in ann a rá liomsa an méid de na heagrais a mbeidh——

I would appreciate it if the Deputy would say it in English.

Tá coras aistriúcháin anseo agus sílim go bhfuil sé——

It is not working. Could the Deputy say it in English, please?

Tá sé briste cosúil leis an Ríaltas. I was going to ask if it is intended that the organisations or the individuals who are successful in getting licences will be allowed to broadcast without restriction into Gaeltacht areas with bulletins that would invariably be in English, with advertising and pop music in English?

It would be inappropriate to reveal the details of the Bill in advance of its circulation but the Deputy can be assured that the Government have been very conscious of the particular areas in the Gaeltacht.
