Vol. 375 No. 6

Written Answers. - Nuclear Waste.

59.

asked the Minister for Energy the significance, for his efforts in reducing the effects of the British nuclear industry in Ireland, of Portugal's success in stopping at EC level the Aldradavilla nuclear waste project in Spain near the Portuguese border.

I understand that the proposed Aldradavilla project was a research project into the feasibility of granite as a long term storage location for radioactive waste. I believe that the decision of the Spanish Government not to proceed with the project sets an example of one country which uses nuclear energy recognising the legitimate concerns of a neighbouring country about the transboundary effects and potential risks which can arise especially where nuclear projects are planned in border or neighbouring areas. I am encouraged by this development and I trust that it will help our own initiatives on the disposal of nuclear waste.
