Vol. 375 No. 7

Written Answers. - Grant and Mortgage Subsidy Payments.

80.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will consider making a special grant available to Cavan County Council to improve the lighting in Redhills village having due regard to the fact that Redhills is a Border village with inadequate lighting at the present time; and if he will consider giving a special grant to Cavan County Council for installation of a fire-hydrant in Redhills, again taking into account the village's proximity to the Border.

The provision of public lighting in Redhills is primarily a matter for the local authority. Road grant assistance for the installation of lighting schemes is confined to traffic route lighting on national roads and major urban routes which may carry substantial volumes of traffic. The provision of a fire hydrant would be entirely a matter for the local authority concerned; financial assistance from the Exchequer is reserved for major improvements of a capital nature.

81.

asked the Minister for the Environment when a mortgage subsidy will be paid to persons (details supplied) in Cork city.

A mortgage subsidy cannot be allowed as the application was received after 6 March 1987, which was the final date for the receipt of applications.

82.

asked the Minister for the Environment when a house improvement grant will be finally approved and payment issued to a person (details supplied) in County Wexford and the reason for the delay in dealing with this case.

There was no undue delay in this case; the grant will be paid as soon as possible.

83.

asked the Minister for the Environment when a mortgage subsidy will be paid to persons (details supplied) in Dublin 5.

The first instalment of the mortgage subsidy will be paid as soon as possible.

84.

asked the Minister for the Environment the reason he will not sanction an increase in a loan for a person (details supplied) in County Cavan; if he has considered this person's position as a result of a hurricane partly demolishing his house during construction of same; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the house as it now stands is of no benefit to the person in question or to Cavan County Council and if his attention has been further drawn to the fact that the council are anxious to grant this person an increase in loan in order that he may complete his house and take up residence when he can then commence his repayment to the council; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am having the special circumstances of this case examined by my Department.

85.

asked the Minister for the Environment when payment of a new house grant will issue to a person (details supplied) in County Tipperary.

A new house grant cannot be allowed as the floor area of the house exceeds the statutory limit.
