Vol. 375 No. 9

Written Answers. - County Kildare Schools.

70.

asked the Minister for Education if it will be possible, either in the current year or in 1988, to provide the required extension of facilities at Caragh national school, Naas, County Kildare; when she expects the work will commence; and if she will made a statement on the matter.

I do not expect to be in a position either in the current year or in 1988 to provide funds for the proposed extension of facilities at Caragh national school, Naas, County Kildare. This arises because of the pressure on the capital funds available to my Department for the national schools building programme.

asked the Minister for Education if it is proposed to improve and extend facilities at the No. 2 national school, Monasterevan, County Kildare; if she intends that this work would proceed, either in the current year or in 1988; if her attention has been drawn to the extreme lack of facilities at this school at the present time; her views on whether basic health and fire regulations can be maintained in the school in its present condition; and if she will make a statement regarding the manner in which this community's primary education requirements are to be met.

My Department are agreeable in principle to grant-aiding the improvement and extension of facilities at the No. 2 national school, Monasterevan, County Kildare. Efforts in that direction have so far been unsuccessful, in that a scheme of building prepared for the school proved to be too costly. Efforts will be continued in consultation with the school authorities to assist them in finding a solution to their accommodation problems, and any necessary grant assistance will be made available as soon as a suitable solution is found. While I agree that the school's present accommodation is unsuitable, I fear it is unlikely that the question of providing grant moneys will arise in the current financial year.
