Vol. 376 No. 3

Written Answers. - Second Level Schools Funding.

17.

asked the Minister for Education (a) the total amount of moneys being allocated in her capital budget for second level schools in 1988; (b) the names of the schools to which the proposed allocations are to be made; and (c) the names of the schools and the relevant dates at which they made their applications to her Department.

By referring to the Estimates for Public Services (Abridged Version) for 1988 the Deputy will see that the capital budget for second-level schools in 1988 is £21 million.

It is estimated this allocation is sufficient only to meet expenditure arising in 1988 on: (i) projects where building has already commenced or been completed; (ii) professional services and equipment or property acquisitions already authorised and (iii) minor and emergency capital works such as provision of temporary prefabricated buildings and urgent repairs to roofs. The number of projects at (i) and (ii) above on which expenditure could arise in 1988 was in excess of 370 as of 28 October, 1987 which are also the projects which relate to parts (b) and (c) of the Deputy's question.

I am not prepared to authorise the compilation of the information sought by the Deputy in those parts of his question as it would require an inordinate amount of staff time.
