Vol. 376 No. 3

Written Answers. - Pupil-Teacher Ratio.

39.

asked the Minister for Education the number of junior-primary schools in Dublin's inner city which will be adversely affected by the change in the pupil-teacher ratio; the plans, if any, she has to counter these effects; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The position of national schools where staffing may be affected under the new schedule of averages will not be determined until the school returns of averages for the quarter ended 31 December 1987 are available. My Department will be writing to the management authorities early in January next to clarify, as may be necessary, the staffing position in the schools in question.

I have already announced that remedial posts, special concessionary posts in disadvantaged areas, and posts in special education will not be affected, and that other special arrangements will enable teachers with panel rights and certain categories of teachers who do not have panel rights to be retained in their posts until the end of the school-year.
