asked the Minister for Health the number of hospital beds closed since 1 January 1987; the type of beds closed; and the distribution of beds closed by health board areas.
Written Answers. - Hospital Bed Closures.
I propose to circulate a table with the Official Report giving information on the number of beds which have been closed since 1 January 1987 (including those likely to be closed before the end of the year) and which are unlikely to be reopened in the foreseeable future. The tables give the breakdown of beds closed in acute hospitals (consultant staffed and non-consultant staffed); geriatric hospitals and psychiatric hospitals.
In relation to acute hospitals, I should point out that in certain cases where beds were closed as a consequence of new beds coming on stream elsewhere, the net reduction of beds is included in these figures only.
