Vol. 376 No. 5

Written Answers. - Kilkenny Level Crossings.

115.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if he will give the present position regarding category C gates in Lavistown, County Kilkenny and Garrandarragh, Mullinavat, County Kilkenny.

Section 47 of the Railways Clauses Consolidation Act, 1845, provides that gates at level crossings should be kept closed across the roadway on a 24 hour basis subject to road traffic requirements i.e. category C. The Act also provides that in cases where the Minister for Tourism and Transport is satisfied that it would be more conducive to public safety to have the gates kept closed across the railway i.e. Category CX, he may by order authorise this change of designation.

I understand from Iarnród Éireann that the company has carried out a traffic census at each of these crossings and, based on the results, intends to submit applications for a change in designation to Category CX in respect of each of the two crossings. As soon as these applications have been received in my Department, they will be examined as sympathetically and as expenditiously as possible.
