asked the Minister for Labour if he will name the employment exchanges where a leaflet promoting the enterprise scheme was distributed; the estimated cost and number of leaflets in the case of each employment exchange; if he will explain the purpose of distributing these leaflets; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The leaflet publicising the enterprise scheme to which the Deputy refers was circulated to the unemployed by all employment exchanges and branch employment offices of the Department of Social Welfare in October 1987.

The number of leaflets circulated by exchanges in their control areas was as follows:

The cost of the circulation in terms of design, production and delivery costs was £4,820.97 overall, an average cost of approximately 2p per leaflet.

As part of its information service to clients, the employment schemes of the Department are publicised from time to time in the national dailies. In this instance it was considered that the publicity would be better targetted and far cheaper than the national press if circulated by the local office network of the Department of Social Welfare.
