asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will enumerate the times and other details relating to permissions sought by various Governments for overflights in Irish airspace, indicating whether or not nuclear weapons or payloads of any kind were involved in any such overflights; and if he will make available the same information with regard to ships calling to Irish ports including (a) the number of visits, (b) countries of origin, (c) whether or not permissions were sought, and (d) the nature of the weapons or payloads involved.
Written Answers. - Overflights and Visits to Ports.
The information requested by the Deputy in respect of permission sought for overflights for foreign military aircraft in the period January to November 1987 is set out in the following tabular statement (a). Among the conditions on which permission for such overflights is granted are: (a) that the relevant aircraft are unarmed and carry no arms, ammunition, explosives or intelligence-gathering equipment, and (b) that the aircraft shall not, without the express permission of the Minister for Tourism and Transport, carry any dangerous goods.
Authorisation is normally granted by the Department of Foreign Affairs for visits to Irish ports by foreign naval vessels provided that such vessels are not carrying nuclear weapons and do not form part of a naval exercise. The visits set out in tabular statement (b) were duly authorised by my Department for the period January to November 1987.
