Vol. 376 No. 7

Written Answers. - Garda Síochána — RUC Co-operation.

19.

asked the Minister for Justice following the recent meeting between the Garda Commissioner and the Chief Constable of the RUC, his views on whether there will be greater success in apprehending those involved in terrorist crimes; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

26.

asked the Minister for Justice if he has satisfied himself regarding the level of co-operation that exists between the Garda Síochána and the RUC; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 19 and 26 together.

The Garda Commissioner, at the request of the Taoiseach, met the RUC Chief Constable on 10 November with a view to co-ordinating the efforts of the security forces following the outrage in Enniskillen on the previous Sunday and the Commissioner assured the Chief Constable that every effort would be made by the Garda to bring those responsible to justice, if they are known to be in this jurisdiction.

I am satisfied that there is a very high level of co-operation between the Garda Síochána and the RUC and I am informed by the Garda Commissioner that relations between the two Forces are excellent.
