Vol. 376 No. 7

Written Answers. - Wheatfield (Dublin) Prison.

20.

asked the Minister for Justice the estimated date for the opening of Wheatfield prison, Dublin 22; if he will outline the estimated cost of providing this prison; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Place of Detention at Wheatfield to cater for 320 male juvenile offenders in the 16 to 21 years age group is nearing completion and should be operational in March or April next year. There was an outlay of £4.546 million between 1979 and 1984 in respect of site acquisition, development, enclosure and services buildings. The final cost, mainly of the custodial buildings on which construction commenced in 1984, is likely to be £36 million.
