45.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of reviews of recipients of deserted wife's benefit undertaken by his Department for the period 1 July 1986 to 30 June 1987.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 25 and 45 together.

In the period 1 July 1986 to 30 June 1987 reviews of some 2,500 deserted wife's allowance and benefit claims were carried out. These reviews resulted in the termination of 302 deserted wife's allowance claims and 264 deserted wife's benefit claims, respectively. In addition, decisions to revise up or down the value of the awards were made in 598 deserted wife's allowance claims and 646 deserted wife's benefit claims. These revisions arose from situations where there were changes in family circumstances.

A total of approximately 700 claims were unaffected by the results of the review.
