Vol. 377 No. 1

Written Answers. - Remedial Teachers.

299.

asked the Minister for Education if a remedial teacher will be appointed to a school (details supplied) in Dublin 7 which is the only inner city school without a remedial teacher; the reason a remedial teacher has not yet been appointed; and the criteria used for allocating remedial teachers.

Applications of schools for remedial teaching posts are processed in the Department and posts are allocated in accordance with a priority of educational need. The number of remedial posts in any school year depends on the financial resources available to the Department.

The school in question has not been placed sufficiently high on the list of priority of need to warrant the appointment of a remedial teacher.

I should say that this school benefits under the special staffing scheme for national schools in areas of disadvantage in that it has, at present, two posts over and above the staffing quota which the enrolment warrants under the rules.
