Vol. 377 No. 3

Written Answers. - EC Regional Fund Grants.

31.

asked the Minister for Finance the amount of the EC Regional Fund grants paid in 1986 and 1987 in respect of projects in each of the Euro constituencies.

It is not practicable to maintain records of payments from the European Regional Development Fund in the format which the Deputy requires. The following, however, is a breakdown of ERDF commitments for the years 1986 and 1987 broken down in so far as is possible on a Euro-constituency basis.

A further £11 million commitments were received during 1987 in respect of multi-regional telecommunication development projects which cannot be broken down on a county by county basis.

In addition in 1987 commitments of £38 million, £19 million and £194 million were received in respect of the Star and Valoren Community Programmes and the National Programme of Community Interest — Roads development, respectively.

Star Programme

This programme concerns the improvement of access to advanced telecommunications and is applicable to the entire country. It is not possible to determine in advance the amounts of ERDF assistance which will be applicable to individual areas within the programme.

Valoren Programme

This programme concerns the development of indigenous energy resources and is applicable to the entire country. It is not possible to determine in advance the amount of ERDF assistance which will be applicable to individual areas within the programme.

National Programme of Community Interest — Roads development

This programme concerns roads development throughout the entire country. Whereas certain national routes linking the main access points and major centres of population are targetted as priorities under the programme other national routes will be attended to on a selective basis as dictated by capacity needs and as resources permit. It is not therefore possible to determine in advance the amount of ERDF assistance which will be applicable to individual areas within the programme.
