Vol. 377 No. 4

Written Answers. - Clare River Pollution.

12.

asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the serious pollution of the Clare river at Tuam, County Galway which is caused by an overspill from the public sewerage scheme in the town of Tuam; and if he will immediately give approval to proposals for new sewerage treatment works forwarded to his Department by Galway County Council.

I understand that some pollution results from the treatment works at Tuam which discharges to the Nanny River, a tributary of the Clare River, but that the effects on the water quality of the Clare River are limited.

Contract documents for a proposed new treatment works which will relieve this problem have been submitted to my Department. However, the council have yet to confirm the completion of the necessary preliminary planning arrangements before further consideration can be given to approving the proposal.
