Vol. 377 No. 4

Written Answers. - Irish Water Safety Association.

15.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the basis on which the proposed amalgamation of the Irish Water Safety Association, the National Road Safety Association and the Fire Prevention Council will take place; in particular, whether the new arrangements will ensure the retention of the name and logo of the Irish Water Safety Association; and if he will outline the arrangements made to ensure the maintenance of the high standards set in the past by the Irish Water Safety Association.

83.

asked the Minister for the Environment whether he has received a submission from the Kilkenny branch of the Irish Water Safety Association; if so, his views on the contents; and whether he will allow the Natural Safety Association to continue usage of the IWSA logo in matters connected with water safety.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 15 and 83 together. The amalgamation of the functions of the former National Road Safety Association, the Fire Prevention Council and the Irish Water Safety Association under the new National Safety Council, came into operation on 1 January 1988. Matters relating to its public image, logo, etc. are entirely within the discretion of the council.

I am confident that the council, which includes both the chairman and vice-chairman of the former Irish Water Safety Association, will take full account of the high standing of the Irish Water Safety Association as well as that of the other two bodies in the discharge of its functions and I have no doubt that the council will ensure that high standards apply to all aspects of its work. No formal submission has been received from the Kilkenny branch of the Irish Water Safety Association.
