Vol. 377 No. 6

Written Answers - Pollution Reports.

182.

asked the Minister for the Environment the number of initial reports he has received to date from the task forces in each county which were set up to combat pollution, under the Ministers for Agriculture and Food, the Marine and the Environment; those who are involved in these task forces; their terms of reference; and if each county has established one.

As part of the Government's programme on water pollution, I requested each county manager in November 1987 to organise task forces comprising local authority, fishery board and farm development services personnel to survey farms in priority areas in each county for the purpose of identifying potential sources of water pollution. The response to my request has been satisfactory. I understand from the local authorities that task forces are already in operation in the majority of counties and in most of the remaining counties arrangements are in hand which will ensure that a significant number of farms are surveyed before the silage making season. The task forces will be reporting to the local authorities as the statutory bodies responsible for pollution control. It is for these authorities to determine what remedial measures are required to deal with any sources of pollution identified in the reports on individual farms.
