Vol. 377 No. 6

Written Answers - Dismissal of Teachers.

232.

asked the Minister for Education the number of teachers in each sector who have been dismissed in the last ten years for inefficiency or incompetence.

Staff appointments and dismissals are essentially matters for the management authorities of secondary, community, comprehensive and vocational schools and colleges.

My Department does not have a record of dismissals by the management authorities of secondary, community or comprehensive schools on grounds of inefficiency or incompetence.

My Department have not withheld salary from any teacher from a secondary, community or comprehensive school in the last ten years for inefficiency or incompetence.

One second level vocational teacher was removed from office under section 8 (3) of the Vocational (Amendment) Act, 1944 having failed to perform satisfactorily the duties of his office.

No national school teacher has been dismissed for inefficiency or incompetence in the last ten years.

The position in relation to permanent wholetime teachers employed in third-level VEC colleges is that my Department have conveyed approval for the dismissal of two such teachers in the last ten years.

In the Higher Education Authority sector of third-level dismissals of staff for inefficiency or incompetence would be a matter for the authorities of the individual institution, with the exception of Thomond College and the two National Institutes for Higher Education, where the consent of the Minister for Education would have to be obtained.

Inquiries indicate that dismissals for these reasons have taken place over the period in question but details of the numbers involved are not available to me.
