Vol. 377 No. 6

Written Answers - Geriatric Care.

49.

asked the Minister for Health if he has satisfied himself that adequate facilities are available in each health board area for the care of the geriatric population; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There are a wide range of health and welfare services available to the population generally, including the elderly. I am satisfied that there is an adequate level of services available generally, though I recognise that there are some problems in relation to the provision of services for the aged. The overall provision of services for the elderly is currently being examined by a working party on health and welfare services for the elderly. This examination has involved a comprehensive review of the community, residential hospital and housing services for the elderly and the working part will be making recommendations regarding the future provision and the organisation of these services. I understand that the working party will be in a position to report to me fairly soon.
