Vol. 377 No. 6

Written Answers - Grand Canal Harbour Basin

95.

asked the Minister for Finance the proposals, if any, he has for the redevelopment of the Grand Canal Harbour Basin in Dublin 4, whether any commitments or agreements have been made to community groups to make permanent space available for water-related activities; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Grand Canal Basin in Ringsend, Dublin 4, in common with all the canal property transferred to the Commissioners of Public Works under the Canals Act, 1986, will be managed and developed as a public amenity. Because of the need to concentrate the resources available to the commissioners on the backlog of urgently required maintenance work throughout the canal system at present, it will be some time before specific proposals for redevelopment of the Ringsend Basin can be formulated.

Meanwhile, the Commissioners of Public Works are engaged in ongoing discussions with local community groups as to how best the water-related activities proposed by them for the canal basin can be accommodated.
