Vol. 377 No. 9

Written Answers. - Hip Operation Delay.

200.

asked the Minister for Health the reason a person (details supplied) in County Kerry has been awaiting a hip operation since 14 November 1986 and if he will initiate an inquiry into the matter immediately.

As the Deputy is aware there has always been a waiting period for elective operations for joint replacement in the Southern Health Board. However, I must emphasise that medical need should be the criterion for admission to hospital services. The admission of a patient to hospital is a matter for the clinical decision of the consultant concerned and the hospital authority. I am sure the Deputy will appreciate that it would not be appropriate for me to initiate an inquiry on behalf of an individual patient in these circumstances. Should the Deputy wish to pursue the matter, he should contact the Southern Health Board direct.
