Written Answers. - Theft of Seized Petrol.

40.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will outline the circumstances in which a seized quantity of petrol was stolen from a customs compound in Dundalk, County Louth recently.

A lorry containing 500 gallons of petrol in a concealed compartment was seized in County Meath by Customs officers on 15 October 1987 and removed by them to the Customs compound at Ardee Road, Dundalk. At approximately 10.25 p.m. that night a number of men entered the yard in which the vehicle was held, having cut the lock on the gate, and drove the vehicle and its contents out of the yard. In the course of this action the intruders caused damage to the Customs and Excise premises and to two official vehicles. The theft was immediately reported to the Garda Síochána and their investigations into the matter are continuing.
