Vol. 378 No. 2

Written Answers. - Accommodation Standards in Primary School.

58.

asked the Minister for Education, in as much as Circular 24/82 setting out standards for accommodation and amenities in national schools specify the minimum requirement of 600 square feet per classroom, and rule 31 of her Department's Rules for National Schools states that 15 square feet per child is the required classroom area necessary to accommodate each pupil, if she will undertake that in the case of St. John's national school, Ballyvaughan, County Clare, the present allocation of three teachers and a third classroom which is prefabricated, added to the school in 1984, will be retained as long as enrolments remain above 50 pupils, i.e. the number which can be accommodated under rule 31, in the two permanent classrooms totalling 840 square feet; and if not, if she will specify the grounds on which the allocation of teachers or the number of classrooms will be reduced.

This school will be included in the review of schools affected by Circular 20/87 and all relevant factors will be taken into account in reaching a decision.
