Vol. 378 No. 3

Written Answers. - Attempted Suicide Proceedings.

54.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of occasions on which proceedings have been initiated against persons who have attempted suicide in each of the last ten years; and whether there are any plans to decriminalise attempted suicide.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that during the ten year period ended 31 December, 1987 proceedings for attempted suicide were instituted in one case only. The charges in this case, in 1978, were subsequently withdrawn.

The law relating to suicide is being examined in my Department at present. Any legislative proposals I may have in this regard in accordance with normal practice, will be announced in the ordinary way when they have been considered and approved by the Government.
