Vol. 378 No. 6

Written Answers. - Pre-Retirement Allowance Scheme.

138.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the approximate reduction in unemployment that he expects to result from the introduction of the proposed pre-retirement pension scheme.

Proposals for a pre-retirement allowance scheme aimed at the long term unemployed over 60 years of age are at present being drawn up with a view to inclusion in the forthcoming Social Wel- fare Bill. The intention of the scheme would be to provide more flexible arrangements for unemployed people in the over-60 age group. Pending the finalisation of the proposals it is not possible to estimate the numbers of people who might avail of the scheme which would be optional and the consequent reduction in the live register. However there are approximately 5,300 persons in the over 60 age group currently in receipt of unemployment payments for periods in excess of twelve months.
