Vol. 378 No. 6

Written Answers. - Dublin School Funding.

283.

asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the very serious financial plight of a school (details supplied) in Dublin 8; in view of the fact that the area served by the school is severely disadvantaged thereby inhibiting any serious local fund raising if she will make a special financial provision to meet with the immediate financial crisis of the school; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the financial circumstances of this school. The capitation grant is paid by the Department to assist in the payment of the day to day running costs of a national school. The payment of this grant is regulated by the published conditions which are of general application and this school has received its appropriate entitlement of grant this year.

Apart from the capitation grant my Department has in recent years, made certain funds available to the diocesan authorities for distribution to national schools in severely disadvantaged areas.

Because of falling enrolments at the school resulting in under-utilisation of the accommondation and increased maintenance costs, the question of the school being included in a re-organisation of schools in the area is under investigation.
