Vol. 378 No. 7

Written Answers. - Car Hire Insurance.

44.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the level of insurance charges imposed on the car hire industry is such as to make that industry uncompetitive and would force some operators out of business; and if, in view of the importance of this industry to the tourist industry generally, he will initiate immediate talks with the insurers with a view to obtaining relief.

I am not aware that the level of insurance charges on the car hire industry has made that industry uncompetitive or has forced any operator out of business. The premiums charged by insurance companies reflect the risks involved.

The car hire sector is an important component of the tourist industry generally and if any company has a particular problem in relation to insurance cover for its fleet it should contact the insurance section of my Department with the details. I can assure the Deputy that every possible assistance will be given in such cases.
