Vol. 378 No. 9

Written Answers. - Ballyconnell (Cavan) Canal.

46.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will confirm that the Ballyconnell canal, County Cavan, will be given as much attention as the Grand and Royal canals when restoration plans are being drafted.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Parliamentary Question No. 50 of 6 May last in which I stated that the cost of restoring the Ballinamore-Ballyconnell canal precludes any possibility of undertaking it in present economic circumstances. Under the Canals Act, 1986, the Commissioners of Public Works are obliged to manage and maintain the Grand and Royal canals as a public amenity. No such obligation exists in relation to the Ballinamore-Ballyconnell canal.
