Vol. 378 No. 9

Written Answers. - Stun Guns.

50.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of stun guns in the country; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Garda authorities have informed me that stun guns can be acquired through various channels and the number of such weapons in the country is not known. The fact that these weapons are readily available is, of course, of serious concern to me.

In Britain very recently, it has been ruled that stun guns are prohibited weapons within the meaning of the firearms legislation in force there. The question of whether they are prohibited under the Firearms Acts here is being examined by the Garda authorities in consultation with the law officers and I expect to be in a position to make an announcement on same at an appropriate time.
