Vol. 378 No. 10

Written Answers. - Environmental Protection.

61.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has received repeated representations from local authorities to bring about stronger measures in this area of environmental protection, particularly in relation to the protection and maintenance of buildings listed on various draft development plans by local authorities; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have not received repeated representations from local authorities on the lines indicated. I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 30 of 3 February 1988 in which I outlined existing provisions in this area in the Planning and Housing Acts. I would like to clarify that the effect of listing, which is to bring under planning control, alteration or demolition which might otherwise be exempt, applies equally to buildings listed in draft development plans as to those listed in development plans that have been made. While I have no proposals at present to strengthen the Housing or Planning Acts powers in this area, I am preparing legislative proposals which will considerably strengthen the existing derelict sites legislation.
