The assessment of applications and the issue of eel fishing licences are matters for determination by each regional fisheries board concerned.
In the case of fyke nets or eel fishing weirs, licences are issued by the fisheries board concerned to people who hold authorisations issued by my Department under section 100 of the Fisheries (Consolidation) Act, 1959. Applications for such authorisations are considered on their merits. Factors such as stock conservation, impact on other fish stocks together with suitability of the project are taken into account when considering each application. The relevant regional fisheries board is also consulted.
