Vol. 379 No. 1

Written Answers. - Cork ENT Services.

174.

asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the crisis in ENT services in the Cork area; and the plans, if any, he has in this regard.

The ear, nose and throat service in Cork was transferred from the Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital to the South Infirmary-Victoria Hospital in October 1987. I am aware that before and after the transfer, lengthy waiting lists for surgery and outpatient attendances built up. In the past few months, however, the new regional ENT unit at the South Infirmary-Victoria Hospital has become fully operational with improvements to the out-patients department, the completion of a purpose built theatre and recovery room, the purchase of necessary equipment and the appointment of two senior house officers. My Department are keeping the matter under constant review and will be having discussions with the hospital next week about the situation. I am confident that the position will begin to improve in the very near future.
