The voluntary redundancy/ early retirement scheme for secondary teachers will apply only to the extent that the number of excess teaching posts in 1988-89 cannot be eliminated by other means, such as natural wastage, redeployment, career breaks or job sharing. Voluntary redundancy/early retirement can be allowed only on the basis that the teacher concerned will be replaced through redeployment if the school is within quota and will not be replaced if the school is over quota.
