Vol. 379 No. 6

Written Answers. - Protection Racketeering.

25.

asked the Minister for Justice if he has any plans or proposals to combat protection racketeering in the Dublin area.

I am informed by the Garda Authorities that from time to time allegations of a general nature have been made about the existence of protection rackets in certain areas of Dublin city. All such allegations have been fully investigated by the Garda who have invariably found that the persons making them, when interviewed, have indicated that they were not in a position to produce supporting evidence. Other investigations which the Garda pursued produced no evidence of the existence of protection rackets. The Garda will continue to give the matter attention.
