Vol. 379 No. 6

Written Answers. - District Court Clerkships.

76.

asked the Minister for Justice the policy which is being followed at present regarding the elimination or amalgamation of District Court clerkships; and if there is such a policy, the material saving to the Exchequer of such eliminations and amalgamations.

The restriction on the filling of vacancies in the public service applies to the court service and it is necessary to consider how the court service may cope with unfilled vacancies. Various options are under review and no general policy has as yet been drawn up. In the meantime it has been found necessary to close two offices which were staffed by only one officer each and to transfer these officers to fill vacancies in larger offices.
