Vol. 379 No. 11

Written Answers. - Land for Afforestation.

46.

asked the Minister for Energy the amount of land suitable for afforestation; the proportion of this land which is suitable for both soft woods and hard woods; and the basis on which the land has been classified as being suitable.

There are one million hectares of lands principally wet-mineral, upland and blanket bog soils which are considered of marginal value for agriculture but suitable for afforestation. All of these lands are ideal for softwood planting. A small percentage of such lands, which contain free draining mineral soils, might be suitable for hardwood planting.
