Vol. 379 No. 11

Written Answers. - House Purchase Loan Finance.

81.

asked the Minister for the Environment the amount of house mortgage schemes financed by the State and administered by local authorities which has been taken over to date by private lending institutions.

I presume that the Deputy is referring to the arrangement under which building societies and banks are providing up to £70 million in house purchase loan finance in 1988 to persons who would otherwise be seeking house purchase loans from the local authorities.

Statistics are not yet available to indicate the extent to which the private lending agencies are now involved in this sector of the housing market. However, the early indications are that the new arrangement is generally working satisfactorily.
