Vol. 380 No. 1

Written Answers. - Admission of EC Nationals.

50.

asked the Minister for Justice if it is the policy of his Department to deny access to EC nationals who it believed were going to rely on social welfare assistance in this country.

51.

asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to EC nationals who have been resident in Ireland and receiving unemployment assistance being denied landing rights, especially in the case of Dutch nationals.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 50 and 51 together.

I am not aware of any Dutch national who had the right to reside in the State being refused leave to land on his return to the State.

The admission to the State of EC nationals is governed by the European Communities (Aliens) Regulations, 1977 to 1985 and the Aliens Orders, 1946 and 1975. In deciding whether to admit an EC national an immigration officer may take into consideration his ability to support himself and his dependants.
