Vol. 380 No. 2

Written Answers. - Thatching Grants.

44.

asked the Minister for the Environment if, in view of the importance of the thatched cottage in our tourist industry and as part of our heritage, he will introduce special grants to help with the major cost of thatching, which is now posing a threat to the few remaining thatched houses throughout the country.

Under the house improvement grants scheme terminated in March 1987 thatching, in line with necessary repairs generally to the fabric of a house, was eligible to be considered for grant purposes. I have no proposals to reintroduce any new scheme of grants to cater specially for thatching.
