Vol. 380 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Heavy Transport Helicopters.

5.

asked the Minister for Defence the plans, if any, he has for the acquisition of super puma heavy transport helicopters, a requirement which was needed during the harsh winter of 1982 and which would also be required for air lifting the Army ranger wing to counter terrorist operations.

Limerick West): There are no plans to acquire helicopters of a larger capacity than the Dauphin. Relief operations in harsh winter conditions can be met by the helicopters at present operated by the Air Corps. I am satisfied that the Air Corps have the capability to transport military personnel in any likely security operation.

Will the Minister indicate when the Aer Corps will be in a position to fly the existing helicopters at night?

(Limerick West): In June.

A Deputy

Next year?

(Limerick West): Next month.

Will we have a rescue service in June of this year?

(Limerick West): In June of this year.

In terms of the Estimates can the Minister discuss the provision and placing of a helicopter on the west or north-west coast in order to effect air-sea rescues at night?

The Deputy should put down a question on that.

Is the Minister considering the request of the national committee who want to have one of these helicopters based in the west or northwest? Have they had a meeting with the Minister or his officials to discuss this matter?

(Limerick West): That question does not arise from the question put down. Nevertheless I will answer it. Yes, I understand a deputation are coming to meet me in due course and I have had preliminary discussions with some members from there.
