Vol. 380 No. 7

Written Answers. - Youth Employment Levy.

141.

asked the Minister for Labour the way in which the youth employment levy is used.

Under section 25 of the Labour Services Act, 1987, which came into operation on 1 January 1988, the youth employment levy became known as the employment and training levy. From that date, the levy, in addition to defraying expenditure in relation to the training and employment of young persons as provided for under the Youth Employment Agency Act, 1981, "shall be used to defray such other expenditure in relation to training and employment as the Minister (for Labour) may determine with the consent of the Minister for Finance".

As indicated in the Book of Estimates, in 1988 the proceeds of the levy are estimated at £97 million of which £67 million has been allocated to CERT and FÁS and the balance of £30 million is included in the Votes for second-level and further education and third level and further education.
