Written Answers. - Attacks on Irish Troops in Lebanon.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will give a list with dates for each of the last five years of the attacks made on posts occupied by Irish troops in the Irish area of operations in Lebanon; the posts involved; and the attacks which resulted in casualties to Irish personnel.

Limerick West): Since May 1983, the main incidents in which personnel serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) or positions in the area of operations patrolled by the Irish contingent came under attack were as follows:

12 August 1986 — Post at Tibnin Bridge came under attack from armed elements — no casualties.

21 August 1986 — Lt. A. Murphy killed in roadside bomb explosion near At Tiri.

10 January 1987 — Corporal D. McLoughlin killed as a result of tank fire directed at post at Brashit.

28 January 1987 — Six personnel injured in explosion which partially destroyed post at Tibnin House.

In addition Private W. O'Brien was fatally wounded in action on 6 December 1986 while on check-point duty at post on road from Brashit and Irish troops or positions were subject to firings close on numerous occasions in the period in question from various armed elements.
