Written Answers. - Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will give details of the commencement orders made under section 1 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, and regulations made under that Act; the provisions of sections 4 and 6 of that Act which are now in force; and when it is expected that any outstanding provisions will commence.

The following commencement orders, have been made under section 1 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984:

(i) The Criminal Justice Act, 1984 (Commencement) Order, 1985 (S. I. No. 17 of 1985) which brought the Act, other than sections 4 to 6, 8 to 10, 15, 16, 18 and 19, into operation on 1 March 1985, and

(ii) The Criminal Justice Act, 1984 (Commencement) Order, 1987 (S. I. No. 150 of 1987) which brought the remaining sections of the Act into force on 1 July 1987.

Regulations containing detailed provisions for the treatment of persons in custody in Garda stations have been made under section 7 of the Act. They are entitled "Criminal Justice Act, 1984 (Treatment of Persons in Custody in Garda Síochána Stations) Regulations, 1987" (S. I. No. 119 of 1987). They came into operation on 16 May 1987.
