Vol. 380 No. 8

Written Answers. - Offences Against the State Act.

49.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons detained under the Offences Against the State Act; the number of persons charged following arrest under the Offences Against the State Act, by section of the Act under which people were arrested and charged, for the first six months of 1987 and separately for the second six months of 1987; and also the numbers convicted following detention under the Offences Against the State Act, by section of the Act under which they were convicted.

The following table sets out, for the periods requested, the numbers of persons arrested under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939 and the numbers of persons arrested under that section who were subsequently charged with an offence.

The numbers of persons who were convicted of the charges are not readily available from Garda records and would have to be compiled specially, at the cost of a disproportionate amount of scarce Garda resources.
