Vol. 380 No. 9

Written Answers. - Guidelines for Dealing with Prisoners.

9.

asked the Minister for Justice the steps he proposes to take to ensure the effective implementation of guidelines for dealing with HIV positive prisoners in jails.

Information about AIDS and guidelines for dealing with those infected were initially circulated to all members of the prison service in 1986. In 1987 the document was revised and similarly circulated.

It is the practice of my Department to maintain close contact with the Department of Health in order to ensure that the most up to date information is made known to those working in the prisons as soon as practicable.

I am satisfied that all of those who have to contend with the problem are aware of the situation and of the guidelines. The Deputy will of course appreciate that no guidelines can cover every eventuality which may arise.
