Vol. 380 No. 9

Written Answers. - European Club Soccer Teams.

64.

asked the Minister for Labour if the UEFA decision to limit the numbers of foreign players on European club soccer teams contravenes the policy of the free movement of persons within the EC; and is so, if he has made representations to the EC Commission on behalf of Irish soccer players working abroad.

I am aware of recent press reports to the effect that it is the intention of UEFA — the governing body of European soccer, to impose a limit on the number of non-nationals a club may select for European competitions.

My Department has consulted the Football Association of Ireland about this matter. However, the text of the proposal has not yet been made available to the association. I understand that the proposal is subject to final ratification by UEFA later in the year.

I am keeping in touch with developments with a view to assessing the possible implications of the proposal for Irish nationals. Should it transpire that their interests could be affected adversely, I can assure the Deputy that I shall take whatever action is necessary to protect their right to take up employment in any member state of the European Community.
